This photograph has everything one could want. The young child, Joe Butterfly is wearing some amazing regalia and sitting on a priceless painted hide. The written name and drawn butterfly make this a must-have for any collection public or private.

T.J. Hileman was an American photographer born in Manor Township,Armstrong CountyPennsylvania, who is renowned for his photos of Glacier Park inMontana, andBlackfoot people. After working a while in Chicago and graduatingfrom EffinghamSchool of Photography there, he moved to Colorado and began totake photographs.

In1911, Hileman moved to Kalispell, Montana to open his own portrait studio. He and Alice Georgeson were the first couple to marry in Glacier National Park in1913. Appointed the official photographer for the Great Northern Railway.

In1924, Hileman took photos of Glacier National Park and Waterton LakesNational Parkin Alberta, Canada, moving bulky camera equipment by packhorse, evenat timesperching on a narrow ledge to get just the right image on film. Healso photographedthe Prince of Wales Hotel in Waterton, Alberta, which was builtby therailway.

In1926, Hileman opened photo-finishing labs in both Glacier Park Lodge andMany GlacierHotel, which were convenient for tourists who could drop off their film in the evenings and pick up their prints the next morning.

In1985, the Glacier Natural History Association purchased more than a thousandof Hileman’snitrate negatives, which were added to the collection ofHileman’s albumswhich already contained more than 2,000 prints. Some 107 of thesephotos werepurchased by the Glenbow Museum in Canada, where they comprise partof theircollection relating to Blackfoot history.
