On offer is a very rare variation from the Koka Blue (KokaBlå) service line, designed by Rörstrand’s Hertha Bengtson, in the veryrare green colorway:

Handled Casserole with Lid (hanterad kastrull medlock): Diameter is 6 ¼ inches (16cm), length including the handle is 9 inches (23 cm), and the capacity isapproximately 1 liter.

Two small handledcasseroles(små hanterade kastrullar med lock): Diameter is 4 inches(10 cm), length including the handle is 6 ½ inches (18.5 cm), and capacity isabout 300 ml.

Debuting in 1956, the Koka Blue service was designed byBengtson to be functional and beautiful – a heat-resistant, flameproof collectionof pieces that could easily go from “stovetop to tabletop” without the need foradditional serving dishes. Koka Blue wasso popular that later in the 1960s, the line was expanded to include variationsin brown (Koka Brun) and green (Koka Grön), the latter with muchmore limited distribution.

While all three items are interesting and very rarely seenin green, it’s worth noting that the two smaller handled casseroles in Koka Gröndo nothave spouts, unlike their Koka Blå counterparts. Given this, these kastrullar are better suited forindividual servings of warm dishes such as soups and broths or farina andoatmeal.

Condition Report:

All items are in very good vintage condition. There is no evidence of damage or repair toany item.

Casserole: Theexterior glazing is creamy white with a streaky, paintbrush-like green glaze applied aroundlower half over a decorative, abstract, repeating fish motif, the Koka Bluetrademark. There are very few exteriorscratches visible under oblique lighting, but there are several pinhole “glazepops,” a few of which read brown, depending on the lighting. (The “glaze pops” are largely masked by thegreen band of glaze.) There is an smallunderglazed area near the base of the handle that is rough to the touch(Picture #10 ). The handle itself appears fully glazed but feels slightly rough to the touch on one side. The interior is clean, butthere is a black fleck underneath the glaze on the bottom of the vessel. Near this speck, there are two raised areasthat have been glazed over – none of which affects the utility or integrity ofthe pan (Picture #8 ). This unusual findis numbered and stamped “Rörstrand Sweden” and “KOKA Ugnseldfast 62.”

Saucepots: Theexterior glazing on both is smooth, and oblique lighting reveals virtually nosigns scrapes and scuffs. The paintbrush-likegreen glaze here has been applied over a repeating, abstract leaf motif, another Koka Bluetrademark. Their interiors are clean andalso free of utensil marks. Each has afew pinpoint “glaze pops” right on the bottom of their interiors. Their rims and handles are smooth, and eachlid is unremarkable. These very rarefinds are numbered and stamped “Rörstrand Sweden” and “KOKA Ugnseldfast 8.”
