On offer is one of Blå Eld’s rare jewels, both in terms of size anddefinitelyin terms of color:the extremely difficult to find dinner plate(mattallrik)in thered colorway. The diameter of this plate is10¼inches or just under 26 cm.

Debuting in 1951, the Blue Fire service was designed by Rörstrand’s Hertha Bengtson, who purportedly named her immensely popular design – noted for its striking herringbone/chevron pattern – after a wildflower common to Öland, an island off Sweden’s southeast coast.

The “Red Fire” line (orRöd Eld) was not produced for as long or with as much depth as the Blå Eld. The tea and coffee services were replicated in Red Fire, but not all of the dinner plates and serveware pieces were made available in most markets in this beautiful red glaze. Collectors have, rightfully, hoarded what few pieces have survived, making it all the more exciting when any of the Röd Eld pieces are up for sale. As always, my recommendation for colored plates such as this is to protect their surfaces by using them as underplates for white service items that aren’t generally paired with an underplate, such as small soup tureens or deep soup plates (Picture 10).

Condition Report:

This plate is inexcellent vintage condition. There is no evidence of damage or repair to this item.

There is truthfully very little to fault with this piece. This plate was a display-only item, and as such, it has virtually no discernible utensil marks, especially toward the center medallion. Oblique lighting, however, does reveal some very faint scuff marks at about the midpoint of the radius on several sides. Their position suggests that these are marks left from stacking, not cutlery. (This plate has been photographed obliquely in natural light in quarter-turns, Pictures 6-9, for examples of these inconsequential marks.)The edges are smooth and there is absolutely noevidenceof crazing (craquelure). The backside is remarkable only in the sense that it seems to be two sets ofkiln marks present: the expected triad near the backstamp (all three ofwhichread“white,”Picture 5), and another triad towards the outer lip (the lightest of which is visible in Picture 4, 10 o’clock). This superbpiece is a remarkable find, and a must-have for the serious Rörstrand enthusiast. This item is numbered and stamped“Rörstrand Sweden”and was manufactured in 1957.
