RORSTRAND RARE Eden “Tea for Two” - Teapot, Cups & Saucers - DISPLAY ONLY

On offer is a small tea service for twofeaturingthe iconic“Eden”teapot and companion cups and saucers. Launched in 1960, the“Eden”service was designed by Rörstrand’s Sigrid Richter, a German national who originally arrived in Sweden in the 1950s to work with Stig Lindberg at Gustavbergs Porslinsfabrik. The“Eden”serviceline—which sharesmany of the same forms as seen in other Rörstrand services, such as Marianne Westman’s“Picknick”— was an instant hit, with its pieces adorned with a whimsical, abstract apple-and-leaf motif. While theservice’s initial production run ended in 1972, Rörstrand relaunched the line in 2016 and included several newer, larger pieces (such as mugs and cereal bowls). The items in this listing are from the original production run and are backstamped accordingly.

This listing contains the following items:

  • Teapot with lid(tekanna med lock), 2pieces in total: Spout-to-handle measurement is roughly 9 inches (23 cm), and the teapot stands at approximately 7 inches (18 cm) when lidded. The capacity is just shy of 6 cups (1400 ml).

  • Teacups(tekoppar), 2 pieces total: Theseare very small, dainty cups that often photograph much larger than they are. (In fact, ifthese were paired with a coffeepot instead of a teapot, they would likely be more accurately described as “demitasse cups,\" or “espresso cups.”) Eachcup has a barrel diameter of about 2⅞inches (7.2 cm), and the height is only 2⅜inches (6 cm). Each cup’s capacity is roughly 150 ml.

  • Saucers (tekoppsfat), 2 pieces: Diameter is about 5 ⅝ inches (14.2 cm), and the height is about one inch (2.5 cm).

Condition Report:

This entire set is ingood vintage condition. The teapot has significant crazing/breaches in theglaze on one side of the form. One cup has a manufacturing defect; and the other cup has a fleabite on its rim. This set is recommended for DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY.

Teapot (Pictures 2-13):Atfirstblush, this appears to be an impressive copy of this difficult-to-find collector’s item. All edges are smooth and free of fleabites. The glazing is bright and glossy, and the artwork is vibrant andwell-preserved. However, under oblique lighting, significant crazing (craquelure) is found from the top to bottom, primarily on one sideof theform closest to the handle (Pictures 6-9). What is more concerning is that when the teapot’s exterior comes in contact with water, many of these“crazing threads”become even more pronounced, astheyare surrounded by a grey“halo”that makes them to appear to darken (Pictures 10-13). This“darkening”phenomenon does not appear to occur consistently when the teapot’s interior is carefully filledwithliquid. But since all teapots need to be cleaned at some point, this finding needs to be mentioned. When the teapot isallowedto dry thoroughly—usually after 1-2 hours—the“greying”disappears, and the teapot returns to normal, gleaming state. Itis for this reason that I would recommend to use this item strictly for display purposes. I have tested this pot extensively, and it’s integrity is not in question (i.e., it is not in danger of shattering when filled with boiling water). Nonetheless, I wouldn’t risk permanently discoloring the breaches in the external glazing by submerging it repeatedly in water. Apart from this, the teapot has an exceptionally clean and odor-free interior; a footring that shows remarkably little signs of wear; and a lid that exhibits only very light crazing under oblique lighting. All in all, this is a very handsome pot, one that would be a welcome addition to any curio cabinet or mid-century tablescape. This item is unnumbered by stamped “Rörstrand Sweden Eden.\"

Teacups (Pictures 14-18): Oblique lighting reveals no evidence of crazing (craquelure), and the artwork on each piece is bright, vibrant, and well-preserved. Each cup does have a defect, however. One cup has a manufacturing defect: a glazed over raised “pimple with a tail,” that reads “grey” located on the interior base near the sidewall (Picture 17). The other cup has a small fleabite on its rim towards the handle, which would be more noticeable to those who are right-handed (Picture 18). Apart from these anomalies, both cups are otherwise clean and structurally sound. Both footrings are glazed, but he footring of one cup — the one with the interior manufacturing defect — shows signs of wear and mild discoloration (Picture 16, left). Both cups are unnumbered but stamped “Rörstrand Sweden Eden.\"

Saucers (Pictures (19-21): Both edges are very smooth and free of chips and fleabites. While oblique lighting does not show any evidence of crazing (craquelure), both sauces do show signs of significant wear (light scuffs and scratches), one more so than the other (Picture 19 versus Picture 20). Apart from the expected kiln marks, the undersides are largely unremarkable. One saucer seems to be more heavy glazed here than the other; and the more lightly glazed saucers does show some mild color loss on and near its glazed footring. Both items are numbered and stamped “Rörstrand Sweden,” with one saucer manufactured in 1962. (Because of the dark glazing treatment on the other saucer, its year of manufacture cannot be accurately determined.)

As always, please refer to all furnished photographs in this listing, as they form an integral, supplemental part of the description.I try to “over describe” my items, pointing out any irregularities that a buyer of vintage goods might find objectionable.I am certainly happy to provide additional photography upon request.

Return Policy:

As a longtime buyer of vintage pottery, I understand thatdisappointments sometimes happen. Termslike “excellent” and “near mint” are subjective, meaning wildly differentthings to different people. And it canbe difficult to agree on when “wear and tear consistent with age” has venturedinto the territory of actual damage.Rather than quibble, if youare dissatisfied with any item that you purchase from me, for any reason, simply return it to me within 14 days in the condition in which it was sent, and I will happily refund your money. Iwill pay for return shipping costs, but regrettably, I cannot refund outboundshipping and handling fees in such cases.Of course, should an item sustain any damage during transit, you will receive a complete refund. (In the eventthat a multi-item shipment sustains only partial damage, please contact me sothat we can work out a satisfactory solution.)All I ask in return is that you document any damage, retain all packingmaterials, and assist me during the claims process.

In my experience, the best transactions are ones where thereis open, honest communication on both sides. My goal is to find happy homes for these treasures, with the hope thatthey will bring their new owners as much joy as they’ve brought me.

About Me:

I have been an avid Blue Fire (Blå Eld) and Koka Blue(Koka Blå) collector for almost 20 years. I own over 400 pieces in each line, so if youare hunting for something in particular, please reach out to me – there’s agood chance that I have what you’re looking for. I absolutely love chatting with otherRorstrand enthusiasts!

Finally, don’t be afraid to ask questions. I’d rather be deluged with questions than tohave my buyers experience one drop of regret with any item that I sell.
