“Louis James Pesha (1868 – 1912) was a noted photographer of ships of the Great Lakes and early 20th century Michigan landmarks. Pesha died in an accident while operating his steam-powered automobile. He practiced his trade, owning the Pesha Postcard Company in Marine City, Michigan. Today, his photos are of highly sought by collectors of Great Lakes memorabilia ...
His primary focus was on photographing commercial ships as they passed in front of his studio, on the Saint Clair River. He also traveled around the Great Lakes Basin, photographing railroad stations and buildings in villages, towns, and cities in the United States and his native Canada. He would later print his photographs as postcards, selling them to stores and in classified ads in journals and magazines for the public to buy and use ...
Following Pesha\'s death in 1912, his widow continued the business, in Marine City, until about 1920. She later moved the business to Detroit, but photo postcards passed out of fashion in the 1920s. The vast majority of his glass negatives were then destroyed.”

HISTORY OF THE FAMOUS SHIP:

The Owana was launched at Detroit Dry Dock Co. in Wyandotte,Mich., in 1899 as the Pennsylvania.

Like many Great Lakes steamers, she was designed by masternaval architect Frank E. Kirby. Like many Great Lakes steamers, her interiordesign was handled by Kirby\'s collaborator Louis O. Keil.

The White Star Line acquired her in 1902 and renamed her theOwana. She ran between Detroit and Toledo, Ohio, as well as Port Huron and theSt. Clair Flats.

White Star sold her in 1925, and two years later, she wasscooped up by the Erie & Dover Ferry Line and renamed the Erie, making runsacross Lake Erie.

She was destroyed by the same Feb. 20, 1929, fire that alsodamaged the steamer previously known as the Frank E. Kirby.

But it wouldn\'t be the end. Her hull was rebuilt as thebarge T.A. Ivey in 1934, shuttling coal between Port Dover, Ontario, and Erie,Pa., until 1963.

That\'s when she was sold yet again and renamed the Erie, yetagain. She was scrapped in 1981.
