“Louis James Pesha (1868 – 1912) was a noted photographer of ships of the Great Lakes and early 20th century Michigan landmarks. Pesha died in an accident while operating his steam-powered automobile. He practiced his trade, owning the Pesha Postcard Company in Marine City, Michigan. Today, his photos are of highly sought by collectors of Great Lakes memorabilia ...
His primary focus was on photographing commercial ships as they passed in front of his studio, on the Saint Clair River. He also traveled around the Great Lakes Basin, photographing railroad stations and buildings in villages, towns, and cities in the United States and his native Canada. He would later print his photographs as postcards, selling them to stores and in classified ads in journals and magazines for the public to buy and use ...
Following Pesha\'s death in 1912, his widow continued the business, in Marine City, until about 1920. She later moved the business to Detroit, but photo postcards passed out of fashion in the 1920s. The vast majority of his glass negatives were then destroyed.”

HISTORY OF THE FAMOUS SHIP:

Originally built as the wood night boat Northwest by theRand & Burger Shipyard at Manitowoc, Wis., in 1867, the Greyhound would bedrastically rebuilt a number of times.

It served for many years as one of the two cross-lakevessels of the D&C Line, until the company was profitable enough to ordertheir own composite, iron and finally steel-hulled ships in the 1880s. Itsconversion to a day boat was complete, after having her entire interior spacesgutted and refitted, and the Northwest was renamed the Greyhound in 1886. As anoriginal member of the Star-Cole & Red Star Lines, the vessel was wellknown on the eventual White Star Line routes. The boat was leased to the WhiteStar Line at its incorporation, but was never owned by the company outright.

In 1898, the Greyhound\'s owners went to the great expense ofhaving its old style walking-beam engine completely rebuilt by the S.F. Hodge’sRiverside Iron Works at a cost of $30,000. The boat entered the 1899 season asa much sleeker-looking (and faster-moving) vessel.

By 1902, the White Star Line was ready to order its secondvessel built for the company (after the Tashmoo) and purchased the recentlyrefurbished Greyhound solely for its engine. A new, steel-hulled Greyhound waslaunched in February 1902. It would use the same 1867 engine until the wholevessel was finally scrapped at Toledo, Ohio, in 1936.

The old wooden hull of the first Greyhound would remain asan open sand barge until it was finally abandoned and cut up for scrap wood in1907.

Another detail of the original Greyhound that carried overto her newer model, were the expertly carved larger-than-life greyhound dogsshown running in mid-stride on each side of her bow. They would be removed fromthe bow bulwarks of the old vessel, and were later attached to the new steelversion namesake.

In 1925, the Greyhound was sold to the Red Star NavigationCo. of Toledo. Though the Great Depression, which hit four years later, wouldsink many excursion steamship companies. The Greyhound was laid up during theDepression years and fell into disrepair. She was eventually scrapped in1935-36 by the Toledo Salvage & Sales Co.

The wooden carved greyhounds still survive at the GreatLakes Historical Society at Vermilion, Ohio, to this day.
