“Louis James Pesha (1868 – 1912) was a noted photographer of ships of the Great Lakes and early 20th century Michigan landmarks. Pesha died in an accident while operating his steam-powered automobile. He practiced his trade, owning the Pesha Postcard Company in Marine City, Michigan. Today, his photos are of highly sought by collectors of Great Lakes memorabilia ...
His primary focus was on photographing commercial ships as they passed in front of his studio, on the Saint Clair River. He also traveled around the Great Lakes Basin, photographing railroad stations and buildings in villages, towns, and cities in the United States and his native Canada. He would later print his photographs as postcards, selling them to stores and in classified ads in journals and magazines for the public to buy and use ...
Following Pesha\'s death in 1912, his widow continued the business, in Marine City, until about 1920. She later moved the business to Detroit, but photo postcards passed out of fashion in the 1920s. The vast majority of his glass negatives were then destroyed.”

HISTORY OF THE FAMOUS SHIP:

The City of Toledo was built for the unsuccessful Toledo& Islands Steamship Co. The steel-hulled paddlewheel steamer was primarilybuilt for tourists on Lake Erie. She puffed around the Great Lakes at about 24miles per hour.

She was launched Jan. 26, 1891, at Toledo, Ohio. She enteredservice later that year and ran from Toledo to Put-In-Bay, Ohio. But it was arough beginning, when during her trial run that June, a steam chest (thechamber in the engine from which steam is distributed to a cylinder) exploded, killing one person and injuring two more.

The Toledo was notable for having the first inclined engineon a Great Lakes excursion steamer. The cost to build her was about $140,000.Her maximum speed was about 24 miles per hour.

In 1893, she ferried passengers to the Chicago\'s World Fairbetween the Windy City and St. Joseph, Mich.

After the Toledo & Islands Steamship Co. went bust, theToledo was bought in 1895 by the White Star Line, which later ran thesuccessful steamers Tashmoo and Greyhound.

The 212-foot excursion steamer was lengthened to 252 feetand a second stack was added in the winter of 1916-1917. The Toledo mostly ranbetween Detroit and Port Huron from 1895 to 1916, and then, perhaps moreappropriately, switched to a route between Detroit and Toledo from 1917-1926.In 1926, White Star sold her to the Anchor Line of Michigan, which then flippedher a year later. She would be sold several more times over the followingyears.

In 1932, Charles V. Fix bought her, but had different plansin store. In 1932, with the rise of the automobile supplanting the demand forexcursion steamers, the steamer was converted into an auto-passenger ferry forservice across the Niagara River. In 1941, she went idle and sat docked inBuffalo, N.Y.

On Oct. 19, 1947, the Toledo was towed to Hamilton, Ontario, where she was scrapped in 1948 by the Steel Co. of Canada Ltd.
