Selling a one-of-a-kind Margaret (Peggy) Norton carved block with a smaller block that accompanies its design. The lettering is in pointillism. Smaller block literally works in tandem with the larger block. I\'ve often wondered whether this block was created before or after Norton\'s \"Story and a Half\".
From Elena Sarni\'s book, Trailblazing Women Printmakers;
Peggy\'s own home inspired her \"Story and a Half\" design. She kept her press in the barn behind her house and used it as her studio. Likely not wanting to let her homework from the original design go to waste, she also created \"Story and a Half (small)\" and several other \"lost variations\". Some of the \"lost\" house inspired designs are in the Cape Ann Museum collection in the form of linoleum carvings, along with homework related to the designs. It is possible that she carved some of these designs to test print them.
The hand-cut linoleum is mounted on plywood. It is in vintage condition with some wear and losses from age and handling - see photos. Norton used arrows drawn in pencil to orient her carving and printing. Blocks were purchased from Hatfield\'s Color Shop, either in Boston, Rockport or E. Gloucester. I was very fortunate years ago to acquire several of Ms. Norton\'s linoleum blocks, either with a Christmas, mulberry or house theme. For the sake of proving authenticity, the final photo depicts a few of them. They do NOT come with your sale, just the two show in all the other photos.
Ms. Norton passed away in 2000 at the age of 95 years.
Measurements: Large block measures four by five inches, just shy of 1 inch thick. The small block is two and one quarter inch long, one inch wide, three quarters of an inch thick.
