Stereoview photograph of two men at a stone wall bythe Schuylkill River near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, circa 1860s to 1870s. Theview, from the series Penn. & Delaware Views and entitled (pasted label onback) as Schuylkill River Scenery, Philadelphia, no. 294—Schuykill River aboveFlat Rock Tunnel, shows two men dressed for cold weather standing by a stonewall at the edge of a cliff overlooking a broad river. The Flat Rock Tunnel isa railroad tunnel that was built in the 1830s by the Reading Railroad nearManayunk and is still in use today. There’s a low dam on the river and theManayunk Canal may be partially visible in this view. The print on the frontadvertises Wholesale Depot for Stereoscopes and Views, 113 Washington Street,Boston. That address was used by the U.S. Stereoscopic Co., Fisher Bros., andT.R. Burnham at different times. The stereoview is in good condition with lightwear and soiling. The photographs exhibit good tonal range and show good 3deffect and detail. Nice early Philadelphia PA area image!
