Stereoview photograph of a statuette of a Black manholding a wounded Union soldier, circa 1870s, with a seller’s stamp for B.G.Howes of Worcester, Massachusetts, on the back. The untitled view, from the seriesRogers’ Groups, From the Celebrated Rogers’ Statuettes, shows a finely executedsmall sculpture featuring a Black man in tattered clothes supporting a woundedUnion soldier. This is the sculpture called The Wounded Scout, A Friend in theSwamp, that John Rogers did in 1862. It shows an escaped slave helping awounded Union soldier, and is one of his series of Civil War statuettes. Thestereoview would have been made in the early 1870s. The stereoview is in goodor better condition with only light wear and soiling. Note the rubbing at thecorners of the card. The photographs exhibit good to very good tonal range andshow good to very good detail. A nice Civil War and anti-slavery related image!
