1849 Dated Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber by Ames Manufacturing of Cabotville:

The sword has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 43.5 inches, with a blade length of approximately 35.5 inches. Handle is 6 inches.The blade is generally very bright, while showing surface grime. One side of the ricasso bears the “U.S.” mark and the inspector mark of “W.D.”. The opposite side of the ricasso bears the imprint of the Ames Company in Cabotville, Massachusetts, together with the date of 1849. The wood grip remains covered in leather, which shows wear. The grip retains the wire wrap. The iron scabbard exhibits light surface rust.
