According to the heirs of General Braham, he was swindled in to an investment scheme by unsavory speculators when the US Government sold large amounts of land in and around Huntsville, Alabama in 1818.
There several documents here telling the story in full, but essentially his partners skipped town and he was left holding the bag and owing the US government over $80,000.
Prior to his death, Braham had repaid nearly $63,000. His heirs have petitioned Congress asking the remaining $7,000 be discharged. Based on their testimony and the supporting evidence, the committee agrees to recommend the debt relief.
