From Weller\'s Burntwood line, a 8-1/2\" six-sided Art Nouveau vase depicting bunches of grapes on their vines.Dimensions: 8-1/2\" X 4-1/4\" X 4-1/4\"
Condition: GREAT antique used shape+++++Burntwood and Clay Wood were two different styles Weller released in 1908 and 1909, respectively. Both are bisque-like pottery that is virtually identical in style. Images were incised into the piece\'s textured surface and outlined in a dark brown, almost black, color and meant to resemble carved wood. Early Burnt wWod pieces have very elaborate designs but the time and cost to make them was too high resulting in later pieces being less detailed. Claywood was released the following year, similar in design except for dark vertical ribs that separate the images into panels.This piece is unsigned, which is not uncommon for early Weller pieces. In the early 1900s, many glass and ceramic pieces came affixed with stickers or paper labels. Items were not purchased for collectability but for more utilitarian functions, allowing a paper label to serve its purpose at point of sale and then removed by the new owner. Fortunately, Weller Burntwood is a easily recognized style that makes identification easy without a maker\'s mark.This Weller Burntwood Vase measures 8-1/2\" X 4-1/4\" X 4-1/4\". It has a unique six-sided shape which I think enhances the Art Nouveau style. As far as vases go, it\'s a different enough shape that I think any collection will be elevated by its addition. It is free of any chips, cracks, or crazing and is in remarkable condition being over 100 years old.
