Weller Orris Rhododendron Vase
This vase comes from Weller\'s Orris line, a line often unmarked and difficult to identify.Dimensions: 5-3/8\" X 5-3/8\" X 10\"
Condition: GREAT antique used shape; kiln flaw to rim (see pic #2 and explanation below)+++++I\'m gonna be honest. I misidentified this initially. It looks a lot like Peters and Reed\'s Moss Aztec or Matte Green lines. And a red clay body was very common for Peters & Reed and very uncommon for Weller. But the first few decades of the 20th century was a time when workers went from pottery to pottery taking their knowledge and craftsmanship with them and the enforcement of intellectual property was not a common practice. So seeing art pottery lines duplicated from pottery to pottery was common practice. In the case of Peters & Reed and Weller, I think it was Weller copying Peters and Reed\'s very successful Moss Aztec and Matte Green lines. Peters and Reed used predominantly red clay for most of their lines and central to Moss Aztec was the way the green glaze accented the shape of the piece. Weller used an ivory clay for most of their lines, so a switch to red clay must have been a deliberate change to imitate the Peters & Reed lines. It\'s what threw me off initially.Where Orris is different is first the green glaze. Moss Aztec was a light application of green glaze so that it looked more like a shadow than a glaze. With Matte Green Peters & Reed practically covered the entirety of the piece in matte green glaze. Orris would be somewhere in between with some areas entirely opaque from the green glaze and others a light touch so that the red clay body was still visible underneath. On top of that Weller would apply a light antique metal color to give it an aged look.Weller did not mark Orris, and with its similarity to Peters & Reed, it is often misidentified or not identified at all, making it one of the less frequently seen Weller lines. The misidentifications of Orris is a bit astounding. Confusing it for Peters & Reed is one thing, but attributions where the piece is a white clay body with not a spot of green mystifies me.Weller Orris Rhododendron Vase measures 5-3/4\" X 5-3/8\" X 10\". It is in GREAT vintage use shape with the only flaw to discuss being a kiln flaw on the rim (see pic #2). If you don\'t know what a kiln flaw is, it is when two pieces or a piece and the wall of the kiln touch, gets fired and the two surfaces stick to each other. While separating them might cause a bit of damage to the glaze or clay body, this is not considered damage since it happened during production. That doesn\'t mean that collectors will evaluate and desire the piece the same, but the price would not get as steep a discount as if it were damaged.
