MADISON, WISCONSIN TERRITORY, 1839Commision issued and signed by Wisconsin Territorial governor, HenryDodge for theAppointment of Edward McSherry as Supreme Court Commissionerfor Iowa County. Issued at Madison, Wisconsin Territorial Capitol, December 20, 1839.
Edward McSherry began his professional career as a doctor in the WisconsinTerritory sometime prior to 1832. It appears that around 1836 McSherry changed careers andbecame a statesman in Iowa County. He was appointed Notary Public for Iowa County for a \"Term of Pleasure of the Governor\" on December 9, 1836. He served as secretary of the first Legislative Council in Belmont, for which he was paid $184. for 46 days service. In 1837 he was appointedClerk of the Court for Iowa County under Judge Dunn. Edward McSherry is listed among civil leadersfor 1838-1839 as \"Justice of the Peace\" He was reappointed by Governor Dodge on January 10, 1838,for a three-yearterm.McSherry kept this position until his commission was revoked by Governor Doty on January 5, 1843.

The index to the \"Wisconsin Historical Collections\" lists EdwardMcSherry as a \"Mineral Point Pioneer\" and he is listed as among \"the most distinguished of the earliest settlers of Mineral Point.\"

Henry Dodge(October 12, 1782 – June 19, 1867) was an American politician and military officer,a major player in theBlack Hawk War,Territorial Governor of Wisconsinand aDemocraticmember to theU.S. House of RepresentativesandU.S. Senate. He resided in Mineral Point, Wisconsin.
