Herend\'s \"Embracing Couple\" is a wonderful depiction of an Easter ritual common to continental and American hungarians. It\'s known as locsolkodás, or sprinkling. Traditionally, young men splashed young women with a bucket or jar of cold water This \"watering\" of young women on Easter Monday is an old fertility rite that dates back to pre-Christian times.
The figurine was hand-painted in Hungary sometime between 1920 and 1949. I know this because I inherited this piece from my maternal grandmother who migrated from Hungary at that time. The figurine depicts a young couple embracing and courting while performing this ritual. The young man, dressed with traditional gatyas (pantaloons), vest and hat, pours water from a jar onto a beautiful girl that obviously enjoys the playful attention. She wears an embroidered apron with typical flower motifs, vest and a beautifully pale blue wide skirt.
The figurine measures 10 1/4\"H and 8\" L and is marked with the Herend brand logo on the bottom and hand-engraved with the pattern number 5553 by hand.
This piece is normally offered anywhere between $175 and $400. I\'m selling it at a very low price because it\'s been professionally restored in a four areas. You will barely notice the restorations in the jar\'s bottom, the boy\'s hat and vest and the girl\'s skirt.I\'m dutifully showing pictures of these restored areas (the last four pics). Otherwise, the figurine is in excellent shape, with no other cracks or scratches. It maintains its luster and original colors.
