Two-Piece Advertising For Notable Winslow Hotel

The Winslow hotel was named for Admiral John Winslow, a Mayflower descendant and commander of the USS Kearsarge during the Civil War. The hotel was located at what is today the picnic area of Winslow State Park.

Offering two items: a 5 ½ x 6 ¾ bifold, 4 pp. black and white advertising brochure, dated May 16,1885, and a stereo view by E. & H.T. Anthony & Co. Anthony photographed many scenes on Mount Kearsarge in Andover, N.H.

The brochure provides a description written beautifully in 19th century prose. In small part, “...Nature has furnished for this House what human hands cannot improve on, viz., Air so pure and rare that the asthmatic and sufferers from hay fever, at once find relief, there being no frogs; Spring Water so clear and sparkling that the dyspeptic is relieved from those disagreeable and distressing ills to which he is subject; Trout Brooks, within a short distance of the House, teeming with fish, not having been fished for three years on account of the law...

“Parlors supplied with piano; a Dining-room cool and airy; Sleeping rooms, with exceptionally good outlooks, Spring Beds and Hair Mattresses; Bath and Toilet Rooms; Billiard Tables and Bowling Alleys...”

The stereo view is in good condition with some soiling and light staining on edge of verso. The brochure has a fold and light toning.
