The American Art Works Company ofOhio is well recognized as one of the best makers of Banks and SouvenirBuildings from 1910 to the 1930’s. Theyused a high lead content to achieve spectacular detail in their castings. The humble little cottages they produced toserve financial institutions early on became a favorite of collectors. These well-conceived and executed buildingswere sold widely to financial institutions to use as promotional gifts to anemerging mortgage market. The base remainedthe same and the Cottages were personalized with applied name plates. I wonder how many were made and how many arestill around? Finding two such itemstogether is a rare opportunity for the right collector.

This is an unusual pairof advertising paper weights made for the Queen City Sash & Door Company ofCincinnati, Ohio. I am guessing they areabout 100 years old now. The cottage isexactly the same as 50 or 60 others I have seen except this is the only onethat was not made to be a coin bank and never had a trap on the bottom. Its’ companion piece is a rough log on aplinth meant to relate to the wood product Queen City Sash and Doorproduced. Both are fine examples of veryearly advertising artwork. Together theytell a small story of early industry.

The cottage measures3.75” wide, by 2.5” deep, by 2.5” tall. Thelog is 4.75” wide, by 2” deep, by 2” tall. My Items are as found. Please look carefully at the pictures andrequest additional pictures or specific information if needed. The log has two small holes on the front andback that look like BB entrance and exit wounds to me. Otherwise both show age-appropriate wear andare in very good good vintage condition.
