The Havens-White Coal Company was a prominent coal company in Omaha around the year 1911. Around that time, they were the largest wholesale distributors of coal west of Chicago. A key figure in the company, Mr. Havens, is mentioned in a report discussing the rising cost of coal in Omaha in 1909. The report details that the cost of coal had risen to $11 a ton, which was a significant increase for many Omaha families. Mr. Havens and Mr. Sunderland of the Sunderland Brothers company admitted that the cost and freight on the coal had remained the same for the last five years.
Mr. Havens listed the wholesale cost of purchasing and moving a ton of coal to Omaha as follows: Cost at Chicago was $6.50, Freight charges were $2.50, Unloading cost was $0.10, Cartage was $0.70, and Screening and shortage was $0.20. After these expenses, the dealer had $1 left out of which to pay salaries and get a profit. The company was also mentioned in an Omaha Daily Bee article from 1913.
Tom Collins Havens, the president of the Havens-White Coal Company, was a well-known coal and lumber dealer. He owned the house now known as the Havens-Page House, located at 39th and Dodge in Omaha, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
