Rare c1901 Photo Mayflower Steamboat Steamer River Boat - Destroyed in a Fire

Approximate size: 3.5 inches x 2.75 inches

The steamers of the Nantasket Beach Steamboat Line were a popular mode of transportation in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They provided quick and easy transportation between Boston and Nantasket Beach, and other destinations around Boston Harbor and the Massachusetts South Shore.
The sternwheeler Mayflower, built in 1887 at Pittsburgh, was often described as being “bigger than it looked.” Constructed on a wooden hull that measured 187 feet in length, 44 feet in width and with a depth of 5.5 feet, the boat was owned by Wilson & Bailey, a boat store on Water Street.
Under the command of Capt. Lew Clark, the vessel came out new as an excursion boat that mainly operated on the Monongahela River. The engines were recycled from the packet Carrier and had cylinders of 18 inches with a stroke of 6 feet. Three boilers (26 inches in diameter by 26 feet long) provided the steam.
The Mayflower provided passenger service between Boston and Nantasket Beach from the 1890s through the 1930s. In the 1940s she was taken out of service, grounded at Nantasket Beach, and converted into a nightclub called the the Showboat. The Showboat operated for many years, but by the 1970s, it had become a derelict and abandoned structure. On Thanksgiving Day in 1929 (November 28th), the company's six steamers were docked for the winter at Nantasket's Steamboat Wharf (Nantasket Pier). On that day, a large fire broke out under mysterious circumstances and destroyed 5 of the steamers -- the Nantasket, Mary Chilton, Old Colony, Rose Standish and Betty Alden. Only the Mayflower was pulled to safety and survived the fire.
Consider adding this piece to your collection. Steamboat enthusiastic will certainly enjoy it. There are few photos of this steamboat, although most were taken after the year 1930. At the time of writing this, this is the only photo on this website of this steamboat anywhere this early. Please observe the pictures, as they show the most accurate description of condition. The photo itself is quite thin. The size it was cut to is slightly irregular. There is some damage on the back as the photo likely was inside a photo album at one time.
