Note - it appears that the handle is removeable but the groove you see on top is decorative. The handle is fixed to the kettle by design (I researched on line). You fill the teapot through the spout.

Note - the spout cover easily opens by depressing the wood tab handle. However it does not fully close on its own when lifting the tab. You have to push down on the metal lid to close it fully. I boiled water in it and the steam shows that it is boiling but I was unable to generate a whistle through the spout. I think because it is not tightly sealed when closed, enough steam escapes through the edges rather than being forced through the spout lid. So it is still functional in that you can certainly boil water but you need to use the steam/boiling sound as a guidance that it is ready vs listening for a whistle. Maybe you can tweak it to get it to whistle but you should purchase knowing this is the case as I do not accept returns and wish to avoid disappointment on your end. I've added a video to the end showing some steam coming out and opening and how I open and close the spout lid..
