MID 19TH CENTURY RED HOUSE, GARDEN & MOTIF SAMPLER BY EMMA CRIPPS - 1859:

Mid 19th century linen and wool work work sampler by Emma Cripps - 1859. This sampler is just delightful with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central trio of birds to the top edge with a butterfly, bird and floral motif to their left and right and a butterfly below flanked by a flower and bird. The middle section of the line is stitched with an impressive three story red brick house with the date of 1815 above its six chimneys followed by a flower and two birds. The walls of the house have a fruit tree beside them, each with a bird on top who has a basket and rabbit to either side. There is a flower garden in front of the house divided by a pink pathway with Emma\'s name beneath. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit basket with a stag and two birds to each side of its contents and a bird and bird in a floral garland to either side of the basket itself. There is a rose to the centre of the bottom edge of the linen with a seated stag, dog and tree to the left and right, each tree with another dog above.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some areas of damage to the edges and the bird in the top right corner. One is able to see through these that the sampler is sitting on a later backing cloth and may have been conserved at some point in the 20th century.THERE IS NO GLASS ON THIS PIECE BUT IT DOES HAVE A BACKING BOARD. As such, I\'m not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also stitch loss to the dog in bottom left corner of the linen and less so to the dog in the opposite corner. The sampler is contained within a mid/late 20th century burr walnut effect frame with gilt slip both of which are in good condition.
PLEASE NOTE - This is a large piece measuring 16 1/4\" x 20 3/4\" (sight size) & 20 1/4\" x 24 3/4\" including the frame.
