MID 19TH CENTURY BRISTOL ORPHANAGE SAMPLER BY C.WALTON - 1877:

Mid 19th century Bristol Orphanage sampler by C.Walton - 1877. Worked in red thread on a cotton gauze, this stunning little sampler speaks for itself. Every inch of the upper section of the gauze has been stitched with rows of different examples of sets of alphabet letters and numbers underlined with various pattern swags with animals, a bird, star and crown in between. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with numerous examples of pattern motifs with a crown in the middle, a bible in the lower left corner and a small house in the lower right corner. C.Walton\'s name and the date of 1877 are stitched to the middle of the bottom edge of the gauze with a pattern cartouche to each side.The gauzehas overall discolouration consistent with its age with general, faint staining. The sampler is behind glass so I\'m not able to see the reverse,but the red of the thread appears good though it is likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within a mid 19th century bird\'s eye maple frame with gilt slip both of which are in good condition with the slip retaining much of its original gilding and the frame with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. There is a small \"bite\" to the inner right side edge of the frame and a few small old losses to the veneer.
Measures 8 3/4\" x 10 3/4\"(sight size) and 12 1/2\" x 14 1/2\" including the frame.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I\'m STILL continuing to work on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT\'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I\'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
