Gorgeous black and white paper advertising sign preserved in lacquer or poly on wood frame. This wonderful lady is in 1930s style, with a gorgeous hat and gaze. DUCHESS is written in a striking period font.
The graphic indicates that this is a Hans Flato design. Flato was a German emigre who moved to the US and lived in NYC where he was an illustrator. He created movie posters and ads for Harper\'s Bazaar and Woman\'s Home Companion. I suspect that this piece was for/from one of those publications.
Duchess linings appears to be a clothing/coat lining company that was active in the 1930s. I have attached two advertisements mentioning the product which come from 1937 newspapers. After substantial research, I cannot find this graphic in any offering or publication. I suspect that this was an original paper item which was sealed by a collector on this solid wooden frame. The frame itself shows a nice grain and has a hanger on the back - see the photos. It is 17 x 11 inches.
You\'ll notice the sealant on the left and right side is turning milky - it has lifted away slightly, but the sign itself is still sealed under lacquer or poly. One corner of the solid wooden frame is a bit wonky (see photo).This is a real one of a kind piece to own with 1930s era material that is very evocative of the time period. Hans Flato\'s work is Art Deco to the core.
