Northwest Africa 16723(NWA 16723)

Algeria

Find: 2023 Jan 3

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, polymict)

History: Found near Hassi Ghaneme, Algeria on January 3, 2023 by a Sahrawi team represented by David Lehman.

Petrography: (A. Irving,UWS, and P. Carpenter,WUSL) Breccia containing sparse lithic eucrite clasts (with diabasic to fine intergranular textures) accompanied by abundant related angular crystalline debris and ~5 vol.% of zoned diogenitic orthopyroxene grains within a fine grained matrix. Grains of diogenitic orthopyroxene and magnesian pigeonite are zoned from more magnesian cores to more ferroan rims. Other mineral phases include unexsolved pigeonite, exsolved pigeonite, calcic plagioclase, anorthite, silica polymorph, ilmenite, low-Ti chromite (some in composite grains with ilmenite), zircon, baddeleyite, troilite and Ni-free Fe metal.

Geochemistry: Diogenitic orthopyroxene core (Fs22.2Wo2.6, FeO/MnO = 28), magnesian pigeonite core (Fs34.0Wo6.5, FeO/MnO = 28), low-Ca pyroxene rims (Fs51.1-53.3Wo2.3-5.0, FeO/MnO = 29-33, N = 2), pigeonite (Fs48.5-52.2Wo14.4-15.3, FeO/MnO = 28-30, N = 3), orthopyroxene host (Fs64.8Wo2.8, FeO/MnO = 30), augite (Fs24.2-30.7Wo41.0-41.4, FeO/MnO = 26-30, N = 3), plagioclase (An83.4-96.6Or0.8-0.1, N = 5).

Classification: Eucrite (polymict breccia).

Specimens: 22.4 g including one polished thin section atUWB; remainder with Mr. D. Lehman.
