En Guarde! This wonderfully cheeky cabinet card shows a Frenchman in the 4th fencing position, ready to engage an opponent just outside of frame left. His highly articulated pose borders on the comical and the fact that he's sporting a cookie duster (mustache), wearing a bow tie and fancy waistcoat with a watch fob only adds to the absurdity of this image. In fact, in that outfit he seems more sommelier than fencing master, like he should be recommending a good wine instead of dancing around lightly with an epee. This image stands out in high comic relief from all the other fencing photos of the period.
Condition is good. A small scuff with loss to card just beneath sword, some pitting across image and a few lines running along and down the image.
