In February 1943, during World War II, the S.S Dorchester with a crew of over 900 men was sunk by enemy fire in the Atlantic Ocean. Four chaplains, Methodist Rev. George L Fox, Rabbi Alexander D. Goode, Catholic Priest John P. Washington and Reformed Church of America Clark V. Poling refused to leave the ship until all men were removed. Left aboard, they were last seen arms locked in prayer as he ship disappeared beneath the water. This was the second-worst sea disaster of the war. This dramatic and emotional stamp was issued by the USPS on May 28th 1948. Comes with an attractive display mount.
