A couple of tiny glaze scratches, consistent with age. No chips, cracks, repairs or restorations.

Simon Fielding's pottery was founded in the second half of the 19th century. Simon was an authority on pedigree dogs and poultry. Before WWII he added the name Crown Devon to their wares. The wall plaques known as the "Champion Dog Heads" were introduced into the range by Neddy Taylor, one of the directors and an avid sportsman. The dogs were all modeled by Kathleen Parsons, who has been described as "designer and modeler extraordinaire". The dog heads were modeled on individual dogs and were introduced in 1938. Before going into production the dog heads were examined and approved by a Crufts dog show judge.

The Irish Setter, Rattlin Deirdre, a female, was born in 1933 and did not make her championship, hence she is one of two dogs in this series who were not Champions. Nick Waters, who documented the entire Champion Dogs series, has called the Irish Setter one of the "rarities" in this line. The plaque exhibits fine hand painted details, especially the eyes, and is fully hallmarked. It measures 6 1/4" tall by 5 1/2" wide. It is designated as model 222 in this line.
