Mr. House was very influential in Texas political circles. One of the four men he helped get elected Governor was James S. Hogg in 1892. In 1893, Governor Hogg appointed Mr, House to his military staff with the rank of lieutenant colonel, a position which came with no military responsibilities. He was reappointed to that position by the next three men he helped to become Governor (Culberson, Sayers and Lanham), and became known as "Colonel House", a title he used for the rest of his life.

He backed Woodrow Wilson for the Presidency and in return President Wilson offered him the cabinet position of his choice (except for Secretary of State, which was pledged to William Jennings Bryan). He declined the offer but was provided living quarters within the White House.

There are stains/discoloration, mostly on the mount, along with tears along the edges. There are notations on the reverse, please see each of the photographs.
