EARLY/MID 19TH CENTURY VERSE & MOTIF SAMPLER BY MARY ANN SIMKINS - 1842:

Early/mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Mary Ann Simkins - 1842. This sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a small central flower with a bird, diamond, flower, dog, floral motif and bird to each side, whilst the middle section contains the following verse
Oh God my Father and my Friend, thy blessings to me ever sendLet me have virtue for my guide and wisdom always at my sideThus cheerfully through life I'll go nor ever feel the sting of woeContented with the humblest lot, happy though the meanest cot
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central floral motif with a bird to each side of its topmost bloom followed by a fruit basket and foliate sprig. The lower blooms of the central floral motif have a heart, diamond, tree and flower to both side whilst Mary Ann's name and the date of 1842 are stitched to the left and right of its stem. The whole piece is then surrounded by a floral border.
The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with minor grubbiness around the edges. There are also a couple of very small areas of damage and one is able to see through these that the sampler is sitting on a clean backing cloth. The sampler isbehind glass soI'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also thinning to the stitch work of Mary Ann's name and a few lesser areas elsewhere. The sampler is contained within a mid 19th century reeded oak frame which is in good condition with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age.
Measures 11 1/2" across x 11 1/4"(sight size) and 13 3/4" x 13 1/2"including the frame.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
