EARLY/MID 19TH CENTURY MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY MARY CAMPBELL HOLMES - 1840:

Early/mid 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Mary Campbell Holmes - 1840. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with four rows of alphabet letters and numbers, each underlined with a different example of border pattern, whilst the middle section contains the following verse which has a flower basket and star motif to each side

The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central eagle on a podium with a floral urn to his left and right, whilst Mary's name and the date of February 28th 1840 run across the bottom edge. Mary's details have a crown to each side then the whole piece is surrounded by a floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a few areas of faint staining and some minor creasing and undulation to the linen around the eagle and below him. The sampler isbehind glass soI'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also minor bleeding to the black stitch work of the words. The sampler is contained within a mid 19th Hogarth style frame, possibly its original. The frame is in good condition with some light scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age with a few small chips and losses to the gilt detailing. There is also a loss approximately one inch long to the gilt detail of the outer lower left corner which has been over painted gold at a later date.
Measures 16 1/2" x 14 1/2"(sight size) and 19 1/4" x 17 1/4"including the frame.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
