Early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Marian Hemingway - 1823. This sampler is just delightful with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central rose basket with Marian's name and the date of A.D.1823 to the left of its topmost bloom and the rhyming couplet - Beauty soon grows familiar to the eye. Virtue alone has charms that never die - to its right. The basket itself has a carnation basket to either side with a diamond by the blooms of the right side basket, then this section of stitching is underlined with a narrow queen stitch border pattern. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a charming scene of a two storey red brick house with a path leading down to a set of railings which has a lawned area to either side, both with sheep grazing on them. There is a dog behind the fence to the right side of the house on its lawn, a blossom tree next to its left side wall and a carnation bowl to the left side of the lawn with a queen stitch heart above its left side bloom. a queen stitch flower to the left of the bowl itself and a small flower to its right. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit basket with a heart and two diamonds below which have a floral urn beside them. Each urn has a diamond near their central tulip with a rose by the left side urn and a bird and floral motif near the urn on the right, then this section of stitching is underlined with a chequered border. The top edge of the linen is stitched with a meandering floral border, whilst both side edges are stitched with a meandering rosebud border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, very slightly darker in places with a small, barely noticeable area of damage to the lower right corner. The sampler is behind glasssoI'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There are also areas of minor bleeding to some of the stitch work. The sampler is contained within a good quality mid 19th century rosewood frame with gilt slip, both in good condition with the slip retaining much of its original gilding and the frame with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age.
Measures 11 1/2" x 15 1/4" (sight size) and 20 3/4" x 17" including the frame.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
