Stunning rare early 19th century floral fabric that came from a chateau in France. dates 1820 or so. Beautifully drawn and so well printed! Block printed with I think some hand painting as well. Also notice the tonal background motif! Really an outstanding collectors piece. Beautiful picotage or "pinning" detail added by using wooden blocks with various size brass pins to create subtle background texture, shadow and color. A very labor intensive hand process that produced incredibly beautiful designs.
Light weight cotton was once chintzed but chintz has worn off. Stable but somewhat fragile not brittle though! Is most appropriate for archives, documentation, reproduction, framing or depending on project it could be used with a light stabilizer for light sewing projects.
Condition: I have carefully soaked in natural Marselle soap. There is a bit of background staining that did not wash and I did not let it soak to long as not to loose the aged patina. or fade the stunning colors. noticeable when held to light see last photos. Small hand sewn hem at bottom.Please see photos and use zoom as part of item description.Carefully hand washed, pressed and ready to use.
Approximate measurements 28" X unevenly cut 33-34"I do my best to accurately describe condition and point out major flaws, but condition is seldom perfect as one would expect from a 100 year old textile.
