EARLY 19TH CENTURY ARBOUR, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY MARY YEATES AGED 9 - c.1840:

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Mary Yeates aged 9. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1840 or slightly earlier. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Mary was just nine years old when she completed it. The upper section of the linen is stitched with the following verse with a fruit basket to each side of its title and a smaller fruit basket and squirrel to its right side

The middle section of the linen is stitched with an arcaded floral border with Mary's name and age below which have a diamond motif between them. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a delightful image of a central arbour with birds in flight to each side of its pennanted tower and a leafy tree to both sides of its walls. The trees have a stag and dog to each side, the stag on the right recumbent, then the whole piece is surrounded by a deep meandering floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, paler around the edges and darker to the field from where the sampler has been on a stretcher at some point of time. There is an area of damage to the lower left corner and a few smaller areas to the field. One is able to see through these that the sampler is sitting on a later backing cloth and may well have been conserved at some point of time. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original bird's eye maple frame with gilt slip. Both are in good condition with the slip retaining much of its original gilding and the frame with scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age and a few small losses to the veneer.
Measures 12 1/2" x 16 1/2" (sight size) and 16" x 20" including the frame.
