A superb and rare photo, of KayPetre in 1935 with her 1924 Delage 10.5 litre V12 enginged Land Speed Recordmachine.

The DelageAutomobile company was established in January, 1905, at 62, rue Chaptal (62 Chaptal street) in Levallois, a northwesterly suburb ofParis, France. It wasfounded by Louis Delâge (1874-1947), an ambitious young engineer who had beenworking for the Peugeot car company. Initially, the company was only anassembly plant, acquiring engines and drive trains from other manufacturers touse with their own body designs purchased from others. By 1908, success saw theoperation in new production facilities and competing in Grand Prix motorracing. A year later, they were making their own engines and fabricatingadvanced body designs. Delage cars began winning important races until theonset of World War I in 1914 when the new factory in nearby Courbevoie wasconverted to military production. Post-war, the Delage company prospered, producing high quality, well-engineered touring and luxury saloon cars. Inmotor racing, Great Britain\'s DickSeaman and female driver Kay Petre gained fame in their Delage racecars whileFrance\'s Robert Benoist and René Thomas were among the leading drivers of theirday. In 1914, Thomas traveled to the United States and drove a Delage tovictory at the Indianapolis 500 and in1924, he set a new land speed record at just over 143 mph (230 km/h). The first ever British Grand Prix, held in1926, was won by the French team of Louis Wagner and Robert Sénéchal driving aDelage 155B. The photograph that the winner of this sale will receive, wastaken during this event. It shows Benoist in the 2ND Delage 155B which wassimilar to the one of the winners. Throughout the mid 1920s, Delage vehiclesdominated racing, with Benoist winning the British, French, Spanish and ItalianGrand Prix races. However, the Great Depression of the 1930s took its toll andin 1935 the company went into voluntary liquidation. The Delage plant in Courbevoie was closedand its contents sold. A license to manufacture cars under the Delage name wasnegotiated with the Delahaye automobile company who continued to produce aDelage model until it went out of business in 1953.
