A superb and rare photo of the incredible Delage racer with René Thomas in 1922 before the French hillclimb race at Mont Ventoux.

The DelageAutomobile company was established in January, 1905, at 62, rue Chaptal (62 Chaptal street)in Levallois, a northwesterly suburb of Paris, France. It wasfounded by Louis Delâge (1874-1947), an ambitious young engineer who had beenworking for the Peugeot car company. Initially, the company was only anassembly plant, acquiring engines and drive trains from other manufacturers touse with their own body designs purchased from others. By 1908, success saw theoperation in new production facilities and competing in Grand Prix motorracing. A year later, they were making their own engines and fabricatingadvanced body designs. Delage cars began winning important races until theonset of World War I in 1914 when the new factory in nearby Courbevoie was converted to militaryproduction. Post-war, the Delage company prospered, producing high quality,well-engineered touring and luxury saloon cars. In motor racing, Great Britain\'sDick Seaman and female driver Kay Petre gained fame in their Delage racecarswhile France\'s Robert Benoist and René Thomas were among the leading drivers oftheir day. In 1914, Thomas traveled to the United States and drove a Delage tovictory at the Indianapolis500 and in 1924, he set a new land speed record at just over 143 mph (230 km/h). The first everBritish Grand Prix, held in 1926, was won by the French team of Louis Wagnerand Robert Sénéchal driving a Delage 155B. Throughout the mid 1920s, Delagevehicles dominated racing, with Benoist winning the British, French, Spanishand Italian Grand Prix races. However, the Great Depression of the 1930s tookits toll and in 1935 the company went into voluntary liquidation. The Delageplant in Courbevoiewas closed and its contents sold. A license to manufacture cars under theDelage name was negotiated with the Delahaye automobile company who continuedto produce a Delage model until it went out of business in 1953.
