A very interesting civil war letter written by confederate George C Thweath while he was held as a POW in Elmira, New York.Letter believed to have been sent to Edwin Gilliam Booth of Philadelphia, who was a prominent lawyer and philanthropist.The letter reads as follows:Dear cousin, Mr J, Smith of no. 99. says Mr. A. Booth is dead. I hope before this my reply to yours of the 19th has reached you. Yours the 26th with a check for 15.00 is at hand. I gave the contents as directed. I also gave R.H. Rogers 2.50 who said he had only received 9.50 previously and (char? ???? ????). me. Please let me know if you got my reply to yours of the 19th. Mr (g.G?) Hieks is from Georgia and his parents are dead. Mr. (g.H?) Lovethall is not in (??) c.(g?).A. Lovethall of no. 22 is the only (L.g?) I know. These men got your address from men who made them (promise?) to divide, might I give too much hereafter. I make 4.50 left for distribution. I have written to W.Y. (????) have not heard from him. j.C.
