In the 1940s and 1950s – long before computerized indicators -- many service stations sold or gave away quaint little “calculators” that helped drivers quickly determine their gas mileage. This very good-to-excellent mileage calculator is from a Pure Oil station in Jacksonville Beach, Fla., called Porter’s Service Station and Beach Auto Parts. The “Speed-O-Miler Teller” features a pull-tab to line up miles driven with gallons used to determine miles per gallon. As part of the computing process, it includes three slotted discs to set the starting mileage: With your car key, you turned the discs at the start of the trip to set the last three numbers of your odometer. During or after the trip, you pulled the tab to see your mileage. The ”Speed-O-Miler Teller” measures 6 inches by 2 7/8 inches. Like many of these hand calculators, this one has a metal clip to conveniently attach it to the sun visor. The original clip is very solid with only some very minor surface rust. The mileage tab slides perfectly in either direction, and the odometer discs also turn perfectly.
