The 1908 pattern cavalry sword was the last standard service sword issued to British Army cavalry troops, at a time when cavalry charges were no longer widespread and swords were falling into disuse as military weapons. However, it was widely regarded as the finest cavalry sword ever designed and was still in service during the First World War.

The 1908 design and the more sophisticated 1912 design for officers are still in use today, and British, Australian and Canadian cavalry regiments adopted them as their ceremonial sword. Although this light sword could still produce effective cuts, it was clearly intended primarily for thrusting on horseback and supposedly could match the reach of a spear when held with the arm fully extended. Its long, narrow, rigid blade featured a thick T-shaped spine and a spear-shaped tip that was sharpened on both sides to facilitate both thrusting and cutting.

The generously sized, bowl-shaped, knuckle-arched guard plate provided excellent hand protection, and the substantial pommel helped balance the blade without losing the sword’s lightness, quickness and maneuverability. In addition, the ergonomically shaped, pistol-like grip with thumb recess and textured diamond pattern offered good traction and control, and automatically placed the tip in the correct position for thrusting. The sword was also easy to carry, as its scabbard could be hung from the saddle or from a belt or buckler.

The good value for money replica offered here has a single-edged EN45 spring steel EN45 straight blade, which is bent at two-thirds of its length. The unsharpened edge is approximately 1 mm thick. The guard and knob are made of steel, and the grip is made of hard plastic molded to mimic the rubber or Bakelite grips found on original examples.

The cavalry sword is delivered with a blackened steel scabbard with two suspension rings.

Note that this sword is not a battle-ready weapon. It is designed as a collector’s item or decoration/display piece and is not suitable for combat reenactment. In addition to its quality as a collectible, it is also perfectly suited as an accessory, for example, to complete your length: approx. 110 cm.
