The locale is Brazil. Enough of the history of the lines on which they operated will be given to establish the proper perspective. There were far more two-footers in Brazil than there ever were in the United States where this gauge was seldom used. I have always felt that a two-footer was a state of mind rather than an exact dimension with those having track of 2" - 6" qualifying for the title.I first went to Brazil during 1943. I saw enough in a two-year period to want to go back to see a lot more. Later I made the acquaintance of one of the few, if not the only, person who was interested in the country's railroads. Carlheinz Hahmann, an accomplished draftsman, railroad photographer, and historian, was the person. To him I am indebted for my knowledge of the railroad scene and the visual images of their fascinating locomotives. He had started with the Companhia Paulista, the finest of the Brazilian privately owned railroads, and then moved on to other engineering work.Together we planned a pictorial history of the Brazilian railroad system, his photographs, and my text. His photographs, many taken over 30 years ago, are a priceless collection of the steam age. Unfortunately, I picked the wrong publisher who for ten years promised appearance the next year until I finally repossessed the material. This book contains three complete chapters from the original and part of a fourth. The text has been rewritten to bring it up to date, for one of the lines only ceased operation during 1983.The Brazilian railroad system was and is 90% narrow gauge, from meter (39 3/8") through every conceiveble smaller gauge found on the industrial lines.
