This vintage mid-century carved wood statue depicts a mother and child from the Bambara or Bammana tribe of the regions of Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Guinea or Senegal. The intricate carving and attention to detail, particularly in the eyes, showcases the mother seated on stool with her child standing behind her with arms extended and an alert expression on his/her face. This handmade piece, circa 1950, is a rare find for collectors of African sculptures and figurines. This wood carved maternity is a beautiful representation of the mother-child bond in African culture.
