$1500.00

Stunning & Rare Historic Abraham Lincoln Printcirca 1866. Acquiredfrom a high end antique collector\'s estate. Exceptional condition for age. Truly a museum Quality Item.
This one\'s a show stopper! This print will set the tone for any collector\'s den, office, home entry or other. Has original frame and old wavy glass that further enhances its remarkable appeal.
Very large at approx: 35.5\" x 27.75\" (Frame), 29.5\" x 22\" VisibleApprox: 13 lbs
We took multiple pictures and a video for your consideration in different lighting and angles. We are using the date given to us by the seller, as they believed it was from the famous William E. Marshall etching productions from 1866 and our extensive research indicates they are likely correct. The vertical lines you see in video close ups are from the white Styrofoam panel in front of the print, there are no lines in print.
Given its size, this may have been in a government building, school or court house, or larger home from the era. The print is on a fairly thick 1/16\" or so paper stock and is under old wavy glass. We did not remove from the frame, only gently lifted cardboard backing to check for writing or other. There are no dates on the print, but an old New Englandarea address and surname Jason (Old Bellerica Rd, Bedford MA) near Boston on back of frame. The back of print has J M 4573 marked in pencil. Boston was the major publishing area for the Marshall works, so that fits with date given as well as the address and existing homes at that time. We suppose the mark could mean 4-5-1873, but that would be a guess.
We only did a light cleaning of the outside glass and it could use a little more cleaning. We did not remove print away from glass or clean interior of glass. We noticed a few small spots that appear to be on the inside of glass surface and maybe a few small spots on lower left of print but none of them really effect the appeal of the item in any way (see last picture in gallery). We just do not like over handling 150+ year old items. We still rate this at an exceptional grade, compared to 100 from the era its better than 90-95% of them based on our experience, which is extensive.
This does appear to be a William Marshall print or an early approved variant. It looks more like a painting or charcoal than engraving until you look very closely. But, it was not signed and varies in background from most commercially available Marshall prints from 1866 and up. The pose, clothing and face look nearly identical Marshall\'s Lincoln, but ours is much more refined. We looked at several thousand prints and did not see any equal in quality and we say that in all honesty. It seems only to vary from most William Marshall prints in the background and of course our\'s has a softer (less engraved look). Our print almost looks like a skilled charcoal work or worked photo, but is a print. This pose was and is considered by many as the best post death production of Lincoln that truly caught his true essence. William Marshall was considered a master engraver before he was 21 and was already sought after to engrave era currencies by the US Government. He was in France studying when Lincoln died but returned to start on his work. He also did a famous George Washington engraving as well. I am attaching a Marshall print below to compare to ours (it is not included in sale, but used as comparison). While refined elements of the print vary, the pose and other features are a match. We have offered all we can on this item for your consideration, please purchase based only on your own evaluations of item.
This is a copy of one of the early Marshall prints, it is not the print included in this sale, but used for comparison.
We ship with extreme care! Of course there is free local pick up and we can meet to assist if you are near Indianapolis or driving through. We do this often. We require signature confirmation on items above $100. This will ship UPS Ground as they are the only carrier insuring over $1,000 and even then we have to ship directly from UPS Store. This is a newer rule. We try to refund what we can when there is a notable difference from what you are charged and the actual shipping cost, but we do not know until we actually process the shipping order.
