For sale is an extremely rare antique ledger, the Practical School Register and Grade Book. It was used by School District Six of Steele Township in Daviess County, Indiana, between 1892 and 1896. This apparently was a one-room schoolhouse. During the first year, the teacher, W.N. Baker, kept records for 48 students, ranging from 5 to 16 years of age. Baker was eventually succeeded by Wilson Myers and then by Will McCormick. This book contains 14 full pages; other pages in the middle of the book have been torn in half (see photos). It is a valuable genealogical reference and provides a wonderful look at early education in Indiana. A teacher’s remark on the last page is particularly insightful. It reads: “The plastering is ready to fall from the wall. The windows can neither be raised or lowered. Stove needs repairs. A new privy is badly needed.” Towns in Steele Township include Capehart and Plainville. If you are interested in a specific student, contact me and I’ll see if he’s here.
