Antique 18th Century French Child's Small Sword Rapier Rococo Revolutionary War:

South European/French/Mediterranean. The brass hilt of elaborate rococo elements. Slightly asymmetrical shell guard with scrolling foliate core and edges. Scroll reinforced arms to the guard. Profuse rococo foliate work to the other elements with the grip, quillon block and pommel in complimentary spiral motifs. 29 1/8” rapier blade with a short inscription to the fuller each side, remounted from an earlier sword as was the practice in Italy and Spain. Potentially created for a child, as it is slightly shorter, but it could also have been made for a short gentleman. Swords like this were often carried during the French and Indian War (7 Years War) and the American Revolutionary War.See Neumann, Swords and Blades of the American Revolution, pg. 132, 213.S
