ANTIQUE 18TH CENTURY ST BARBARA BLEEDING HOST BASILICA COLONIAL WAR RELIC MEDAL:
$174.99

These medals were worn into battles by many SpanishColonial Catholic soldiers in the 17th and 18th century. All our listed itemsare original Christian devotionals. Some may have been cleaned or polishedbefore their arrival, by their last caretaker. Their use is for personal devotion.

This medal is 1.75 inches long, weighs 26 grams, and was cast in Rome, asindicated by the hallmark. Its sale will benefit two Carmelite Convents whofeed poor kids in South America. Its provenance is my mother's estatecollection. The information posted and photographs are from her own inventorynotes, and we have no other information available other than her description. On the front is St. Barbara who it was believed would open the gates to heavenwhen a soldier died suddenly during a Battle.

On the back is the image of theMiracle of the Bleeding Eucharist that occurred after a Spanish Battle with theMoors in Spain in the year 1239. The medal is a pilgrimage medal that datesfrom the 18th century. It may be from a soldier's pilgrimage to the Basilica ofSanta Maria Darca, before a battle. The legend says that in 1239 the Christiancommanders asked the priest on the battlefield to celebrate Mass, but a fewminutes after the consecration, an improvised enemy attack obliged the priestto suspend the Mass and hide the consecrated Hosts amid the sacred linens ofthe mass. The Spanish left the battle victorious, and the commanders asked thepriest to retrieve the Hosts previously consecrated. However, they werediscovered completely covered in Blood. So today in Spain, it is possible tovenerate the Blood-stained linens at the Basilica of Santa Maria Darca.

The medal in this listing is the medal that will arrive. Each medal in her collection varies in age, condition, and patina.

This medals dating can be confirmed on pages 2 & 3 ofthe book AN INTRODUCTION TO RELIGIOUS MEDALS, by Bob Forrest, and published byNUMISMATICA INTERNATIONAL in 2004. In addition this book has chapters (outlinedin the table of contents), describing each of the categories of medals, theirpossible place of pilgrimage (acquisition), and origin of the mint where theywere made. We recommend that anyone serious about collecting medals from thisperiod acquire a copy of this book.
