Ancient Peruvian lime coca spoon spatula

From the Moche- Chimu - Chancay cultures, circa 800 AD

85mm. Copper or Bronze. (Books/sale records will record these as Bronze or Copper). Complete

Figurine at the top is a Male priest or warrior wearing hat, holding a hacha (knife) in left hand and ingesting with the right hand (which means that it is a coca spoon with a figurine using coca representing the act itself).

Provenance: ex Washington DC collection, acquired from Monnaies d'Anton mail offer sale

In Christopher Donnan’s Moche Art of Peru, he writes (pg 117):“by chewing a handful of dry coca leave until they form a quid. The quid isthen kept in the cheek, and lime, which serves as a catalyst to free thecocaine from the leaves, is added as the chewing continues. The lime is kept ina small narrow-necked gourd and is transferred to the mouth in small quantitiesby means of a stick.”
