What is Ammolite?

Ammolite is a rare and valuable opal-like organic gemstone found primarily along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains of the United States and Canada. It is arguably the rarest gemstone on earth. It is made of the fossilized shells of Ammonite, which in turn are composed primarily of aragonite, the same mineral that makes up nacreous pearls.

Ammonite lived over 70 million years ago and was a hard shelled squid-like marine animal that existed from the Paleozoic to the end of the Cretaceous era when they suddenly became extinct. They were abundant in all the oceans.

Ammonite is found all over the world but only in Alberta can they be found with this gemstone that covers their shells. It is because of the soil content that the shells change color. Ammonites are found with the colors red, orange, purple, blue, and green; blue and purple being the rarest of all.

The name Ammonite is derived from the Greek name of the ancient Egyptian oracle god Ammon who considered them to be divine and is represented by the head of a ram with twisted spiral horns that are reminiscent of Ammonites twisted shells. The Roman historian Pliny the Elder regarded Ammonite as the holiest stone because it was said to evoke prophetic dreams.

Ammolite is one of several biogenic gemstones; others include amber and pearl. In 1981, Ammolite was given official gemstone status by the World Jewelry Confederation, the same year commercial mining of Ammolite began. It was designated the official gemstone of the Province of Alberta in 2004.
