Here is a rare, stunningly beautiful piece of rippled ammolite, polished on one side. It is from an ancient ammonite, from the Cretaceous, about 70 million years ago. The species of ammonite was Placenticeras.
What makes this so rare is the extraordinary cherry red color (see photos to decide for yourself), and the striations throughout the entire piece, known as ripples. Cherry red is rarer in ammolites than purple.
This specimen is about 39.4 mm. at the longest measurement by caliper, and weighs 16 grams. It is from the famous Bearpaw Formation, Alberta, Canada.
The piece is shown in bright light. Like all ammolite, it needs bright light to make its colors come \"alive\". Looking at ammolite on a nice sunny day in direct sunlight works very well. The beautiful colors will appear to look differently, in some cases, depending on the angle they are viewed from.
There are 5 different materials made of organic substances that are officially recognized as gem material. These are amber, coral, jet, pearl, and most recently, ammolite has been added to the list.
Less of this is being found all the time.
