Ultra Rare 98mm Fossil Ammolite with 17mm Mosasaur Bite Alberta Canada COA 5816:
$389.95

Welcome to Pioneer Fossils
A Certificate of Authenticity, which has a photo on it of the exact item you purchased, will accompany the specimen.
Here is a large, extremely rare and stunningly beautiful piece of ammolite, polished on one side. It is from an ancient ammonite, from the Cretaceous, about 70 million years ago. The species of ammonite was Placenticeras.
What makes it special is the bite mark by a Mosasaur tooth on it (see the dark circle). Do you remember the Mosasaurus from the Jurassic World movies? Apparently they also liked to much on ammonites.
In addition, there is possibly a part of a second, third and fourth tooth marks also by a Mosasaur (see notes in photo 2).This specimen is about 3.86 inches at greatest length (98 mm.), and weighs 97 grams (3.4 oz.). It is from the famous Bearpaw Formation, Alberta, Canada.
Though most people I am aware of figure this and similar marks to be a tooth of a Mosasaur, some think it to be a mark from a small marine snail called a limpet, attaching itself to an ammonite. The debate continues, but a 2001 study concluded these marks most probably matched a Mosasaur tooth rather than a limpet.
This gorgeous solid piece contains, in our opinion, emerald green, blue, amber, yellow amber and a bit of orange.
The piece is shown in bright light. Like all ammolite, it needs bright light to make its colors come \"alive\". Looking at ammolite on a nice sunny day in direct sunlight works very well. The beautiful colors will appear to look differently, in some cases, depending on the angle they are viewed from.
There are 5 different materials made of organic substances that are officially recognized as gem material. These are amber, coral, jet, pearl, and most recently, ammolite has been added to the list.
Rare and less are being found all the time.
