Cesar Chelor is the earliest documented free African American plane maker in North America. He was enslavedas early as 1736,by Francis Nicholson, who is generally regarded as the first documented American plane maker. Chelor was admitted as a member of the Congregational church in Wrentham Center in 1741. He became a freeman when Nicholson died in 1753. Along with his freedom, Nicholson willed Chelor sufficient materials to continue on independently.

\"As to my Negroman Cesar Chelor, considering his faithful service, his tender care, and kind & Christian carriage, I do set him free to act for himself in the world & I do will and bequeath unto him his bed and bedding, his shift and clothing, his bench & common bench tools, a set of chisels, one vice, one sithe & tackling & ten acres of land to be set off to him at the end of my woodland, & one third part of my timber.\"
This plane has a beautiful warm patina and retains a nice strong \"CE*CHELOR WRENTHAM\" imprint. As found condition with various blemishes gained over the last couple of centuries.
Made from yellow birch, 10 inches long.
